The writer must essentially draw from life as he sees it, lives it, overhears it or steals it, and the truer the writer, perhaps the bigger the blackguard. He lives by biting the hand that feeds him.

Biography

Charles Samuel "Sam" Jackson (September 15, 1860 - December 27, 1924) was a prominent Oregon newspaper publisher.

Born in Deltaville, VA, he went west in 1880, settling in Pendleton, OR. There he became publisher of the Pendleton-based East Oregonian, developing it into a successful regional paper.

In 1902, he was persuaded by a group of influential Portlanders to move to Portland to revive the failing Portland Evening Journal. Under his direction, it was renamed the Oregon Journal, and succeeded as the main competitor to Portland's daily paper, The Oregonian. Jackson led the Journal as owner, publisher, and editor until his death.

In 1917 Jackson donated 88 acres (356,000 m²) on Marquam Hill in Portland to the University of Oregon Medical School; the site, then known as Sam Jackson Park, is now the campus of the Oregon Health & Science University.
