At the Isle of Wight, the sound went out and kind of kept on going. And I wasn't... when I came off stage I was kind of unhappy about how we had played. But now, I listen back to those recordings and it's not bad.

Find a good teacher, as I found for my sons. I feel the worst thing you can do is to try and teach your own children yourself, because there is a natural rebellion that occurs.

I didn't want to do a concert of just me on the piano. I don't care how good the keyboard player is technically, even if it were Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea on their own up there without a band, I-and I'm sure an audience-would get pretty bored after a bit.

I don't regard myself as a great classical or jazz pianist. I like country music, but I'm not a great player. I just like music. Drums 'n' bass is pretty exciting and I'd love to explore it.

I had written movie scores, television series, played with other people. Carl had done the same with Asia, with other bands, everything. We weren't about to entrust Greg automatically with a production credit.

I was always playing the Hammond Organ back to front even during the days of the Nice, going back to 1968. Really what I was doing there, was choosing notes at random and trying to make some sense of them, improvising back to front.

I was very young, and at that time I was living with my parents in Sussex, and I was doing a lot of jazz gigs playing terrible pianos, and I thought it was best to get my own instrument to take with me. So, I looked around, and the only thing available in this organ shop was an L-100.

I've broken my nose, I've broken ribs. You name it. In fact, we just got back from South America, and I fell over a monitor speaker on the stage and almost ended up in the front row of the audience. I managed to sprain my wrist on that one but luckily nothing was broken.

My father played accordian in an Army band, and he would occassionally drag it out, strap it on, and play it, and he would make beautiful music. But it was too big for me to pick up. My father wasn't a big man, but it was amazing how he could play it. I still have it, and I still can't play it. It's too big, too heavy.

The great thing about playing with The Nice is we're getting back to rawness rather than getting every single detail perfect, as with ELP. The Nice were a lot more accessible to many fans than ELP but not so refined in musicianship.

The spinning piano, I don't know what is going to be happening with that. I've got to make a call to my keyboard tech and see what's happening about that. It's not a thing that you can do at every venue because it does require a very high ceiling or a very low floor, you need room.

We did the showcase in London and as a result of that I got to meet a guitar player called Dave Kilminster, who was absolutely brilliant, a drummer called Pete Riley and Phil Williams on bass, who had pretty much got ELP's repertoire down.

We got together for rehearsals, before the last tour with Deep Purple, in Rochester. I was a little saddened when Greg told me he hadn't sung in eight months. But, we persevered with going over all the bass notes and everything like that, key changes, etc. But all in all I was very optimistic about the future.

Biography

Keith Emerson (born November 2, 1944) is a British keyboard player and composer. Formerly a member of The Nice, he went on to start Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP), one of the first supergroups, in 1970. Following the breakup of ELP, he reunited The Nice in the mid-'90s to go on tour.

Emerson was born in Todmorden, England. As a child, he learned western classical music, from which he derived a lot of inspiration to create his own style, combining classical music, jazz, and rock themes. As a performer on the Hammond organ, Emerson jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with Robert Moog, and work with his invention, the Modular Moog, an analog synthesizer, in 1969. While other artists such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had used the Moog, Emerson was the first artist to tour with the Moog.

He is known for his technical virtuosity and for his live antics, including using knives to hold down organ keys during solos and employing a special rig to rotate his piano end-over-end while he's playing it. Along with contemporaries Richard Wright of Pink Floyd and Rick Wakeman of Yes, Emerson is widely regarded as one of the top keyboard players of the progressive rock era.
