Biography
|
Stan Sakai (1953– ) is a third-generation American of Japanese descent. Born in Kyoto, Japan, he grew up in Hawaii and is presently living and working in Los Angeles, California.
He studied fine arts at the University of Hawaii and attended later the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.
He began his career by lettering comic books (notably Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier) and became famous with the creation of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a seventeenth-century samurai rabbit. First published in 1984, the comic continues to this day, with Sakai as the lone author and nearly-sole artist.
For his work, including but not restricted to Usagi Yojimbo, he received several Eisner Awards, Haxom Awards, an Inkpot Award and others.
